The Limón Dance Company announced on 23rd March 2026 that it commissioned Akram Khan to reimagine founder José Limón's masterpiece as the company turns 80 years old this year.
"The Limón Dance Company (LDC) embarks on its largest choreographic commission to date in celebration of its 80th Anniversary season, a reimagining of José Limón’s The Moor’s Pavane by Akram Khan," the New York-based company said in its press release.
The Moor's Pavane is a one-act piece, which was first performed in 1949 and is regarded as one of Limón's finest works. He created it based on Giraldi Cinthio’s Un Capitano Moro, published in 1565, which was later adapted by William Shakespeare as Othello around 1603.
Khan will work on the restaging project over ten weeks in autumn 2026 and January 2027.
The Limón Dance Company was founded by José Limón and Doris Humphrey in 1946 and it is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year.
