Carlos Acosta to return to stage for Peter Wright Centenary

Carlos Acosta, Birmingham Royal Ballet (BRB) Artistic Director, will return to stage to celebrate Sir Peter Wright's 100th year, BRB said on 1st April 2026.

Acosta will dance the iconic role of Death in Kurt Jooss’s The Green Table in BRB's the Sir Peter Wright Centenary gala performance on 18th June.

The 52-year old Acosta, who will have turned 53 by the gala, retired from classical roles in 2016 after 28 years dancing almost every thinkable principal role across the world. He was lastly a very popular Principal Dancer with The Royal Ballet from 1998 to 2015.

He will perform o stage for the first time in three years, according to BRB,

BRB is reviving The Green Table upon request by Sir Peter for the celebration because it is his favourite ballet. He was also a late starter as a ballet dancer and was trained with Jooss. Click here for the story.

As a personal note, I watched The Green Table with the Dutch National Ballet a few years ago and it instantly became one of my favourite ballets. The masculine figure scared me with his efface fifth and his ghostly unpredictability. The Green Table premiered in 1932 to express futility of war. It is very very relevant today.
