France unfreezes theatre art funding freeze - Le Monde

State funding for theatre arts, which had been frozen for 28 theatres and orchestras, will be paid later this year, French newspaper Le Monde reported on 21st July 2026.

The sum of 10 million euros of state funding will be able to be paid in the second half of 2026, Le Monde said, citing the entourage of Catherine Pégard, Minister of Culture as the source.

The funding defrost came after weeks-long uproars from performing art institutions and artists.

The funds were frozen on 3rd July for 28 organizations, which subsequently issued a joint communique on 10th July to protest against the funding freeze. Artists used the popular annual theatre festival Au Festival d’Avignon in mid-July to rally against it, the newspaper said in its 13th July-article.

Among the 28 establishments affected were twelve national drama centers (Caen, Bordeaux, Marseille, Nanterre, Reims, Rennes, Saint-Denis, Saint-Etienne, Toulouse, Montpellier, Aubervilliers, Villeurbanne), three national theatres (MC2 of Grenoble, MC93 of Bobigny, MAC of Créteil), two Parisian theaters (the Rond-Point and the Athénée), seven opera houses (Lyon, Strasbourg, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Nancy, Montpellier, Lyon) and four national orchestras (Ile-de-France, Pays de la Loire, Lyon, Lille), the newspaper said, citing le Syndicat national des entreprises artistiques et culturelles (the National Union of Artistic and Cultural Enterprises).

Some of them would have to close their doors permanently without state funding supports.
