American Ballet Theatre (ABT) announced on 9th June 2025 that its Principal Misty Copeland will retire from the stage after 25 years with the New York-based company.

Copeland will come back from a five year hiatus and take her final bow at ABT’s Fall Gala on Wednesday, 22nd October at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, the company said in a press statement.
In 2015, Copeland became the first black female Principal in ABT's 85 year history. Widely regarded as a trailblazer, She danced many title roles, including Odette/Odile in Swan Lake and Juliette in Romeo and Juliet.
In recent years, however, Copeland has been active in publishing books, activism, mentoring and filming - anywhere but stage. Her most recent book is Letters to Misty. Many ballet fans have expected her retirement.
