The Australian Ballet published its 2025 Annual Report on 30th April 2026.
In the report, the Melbourne-based company said it made a loss of AU$4.7 million last year. However, the loss was smaller than 2024, when it lost AU$6 million.
The closure of the company's home base, the State Theatre of Arts Centre Melbourne, hurt its bottom line, the annual report said. The arts centre has now closed for two years out of the planned three-year closure for redevelopment.
Box office revenue grew 4.4% in 2025 from the year earlier. However, it fell 19% in 2024 year-on-year as the closure of the State Theatre began.
"Season 2026 will continue to be performed in Melbourne at the Regent Theatre, and the year is anticipated to deliver a further operating loss," the annual report said.
"The company is excited to celebrate the reopening of the newly renamed and refurbished Ian Potter State Theatre with a special limited season of The Nutcracker in October 2026, before fully returning for 2027 to our longstanding Melbourne home and to a more sustainable operating result."
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and the theatre closure, The Australian Ballet manged to deliver a small operating profit. The company seeks to return to this financial status, the annual report said.
